Coming to your speaker: realtime generative music

Move over, AI Drake: Generative music is poised to be the next big thing in audio — and a host of companies is getting ready to produce, license and utilize an endless stream of tunes generated in real time.

One of the companies that has been exploring the use of generative audio is smart speaker maker Sonos, if a recent patent application for the “playback of generative media content” is any indication. In the application, Sonos paints a picture of a future in which each speaker in your home becomes part of a kind of generative orchestra, with dynamically generated audio soundscapes paired with AI visuals.

Sonos isn’t alone in its quest to use generative media. From lone web audio hackers to startups and even massive publicly-listed companies, a growing number of projects are using generative music for relaxation, entertainment and more. Even major labels have begun to take notice, and are now looking to monetize existing tunes, and create entirely new ones, all with a few lines of code.
