Nokia Corp (NYSE:NOK) filed a lawsuit against Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) in courts across three continents for alleged use of the plaintiff’s technologies in streaming services and devices without authorization.
Amazon Prime Video and Amazon’s streaming devices allegedly violated a mix of Nokia’s multimedia patents covering multiple technologies, including video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and hardware-related aspects.
The Finnish multinational filed the suits in the U.S., Germany, India, the U.K., and the European Unified Patent Court, Arvin Patel, Nokia’s Chief Licensing Officer, stated.
Separately, Nokia also filed a suit against HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) in the U.S. over video-related technologies, he said.
Companies providing video streaming services or streaming devices enjoy huge benefits from Nokia’s research, which needs to be compensated accordingly, Patel added.
Nokia said litigation is never its first choice and that most patent licensing agreements are settled amicably.
In June 2023, Nokia inked a new patent cross-license agreement with Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) covering Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies. Nokia will receive payments from Apple for a multi-year period under the deal.
Price Actions: AMZN shares were up 0.3% at $133.20, while NOK shares were trading higher by 0.3% at $3.30 at last check Tuesday.
