Microsoft Co-Founded AI Safety Forum Appoints First Director, Sets Up $10M AI Research Fund

An OpenAIMicrosoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), and AI startup Anthropic led artificial intelligence safety forum elected its first director on Wednesday and shared plans to create an advisory board shortly to help guide its strategy.

The Frontier Model Forum also voiced plans to create a fund to back research into the technology, with initial funding commitments of over $10 million from its backers and partners, Reuters reports.

Chris Meserole, who most recently served as director of AI at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank, became the ChatGPT parent co-founded AI safety forum’s first-ever director.

Meserole joins a forum launched in July focusing on “frontier AI models.” Industry leaders have already flagged the repercussions of such models on public safety.

Many countries are devising AI regulation. Britain is hosting a global AI safety summit in November, focusing on understanding the risks posed by the technology.

Recently, Google executive Kent Walker advocated a hub-and-spoke method for various sectors and agencies, from banking to retail, to manage technology independently. He dismissed the concept of a universal solution.

On international AI use, Walker sought shared responsibility in ensuring AI’s ethical and safe application.
